Forbes is an attractive, progressive river town in the Central West of NSW. It is located on the Lachlan River and the Newell Highway between Parkes and West Wyalong. The town is 380km west of Sydney and currently has a population of 10,000.
Forbes has some interesting tales to tell from the gold rush era. However, it is now part of a grain-growing region where wheat and similar crops are produced. Local attractions include arts, crafts, wineries and nature reserves. A relaxed country atmosphere along with charming heritage buildings makes Forbes a fascinating place to explore.
Ben Hall Place, located near Goobang Creek, is where the notorious outlaw Ben Hall was shot dead by police in 1865. The Forbes Museum contains many interesting displays of how rural life used to be and there are many more local attractions to be seen in the area.
The town has good transport links and is serviced by coach, rail and air transport via the nearby airport at Parkes.
